Mars shifting into Scorpio deepens determination and long-term strategy.
September Equinox
The Autumn Equinox is Mon, Sep 22, 2025, 2:19 PM EDT in the Northern Hemisphere. On the autumnal equinox, the Sun's rays are directly overhead at the Earth's equator, resulting in nearly equal amounts of daylight and darkness across the globe. This astronomical event marks the official beginning of fall in the Northern Hemisphere, with the days becoming progressively shorter and cooler, and the Earth's axis tilted neither toward nor away from the sun, leading to approximately 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of darkness for most of the Earth.
The sun is directly over the equator, and the celestial equator intersects the east and west points on the horizon, causing the sun to rise due east and set due west for observers everywhere.
Days get progressively shorter, with less sunlight cues plants to slow their photosynthesis and prepare for winter. The decrease in chlorophyll in plants reveals their natural red, orange, and yellow pigments, creating fall foliage.
Many cultures celebrate the autumnal equinox as a harvest festival. Modern Pagan traditions observe the equinox with rituals like Mabon, giving thanks for the harvest and preparing for the coming winter. This festival is deeply rooted in Celtic and Druidic traditions, but it has also been adopted and adapted by many modern pagan and Wiccan practitioners. Mabon is a celebration of the harvest season when the Earth's bounty is gathered, and preparations for winter are underway.
Pagan traditions for the autumn equinox focus on themes of balance, gratitude, and harvest and feasts with seasonal foods like apples and grains, building autumnal altars with symbols of the season, performing gratitude rituals, and creating releasing rituals to let go of things for the coming winter. Other activities involve connecting with nature, lighting fires to symbolize the changing light, and celebrating the balance of day and night with the wheel of the year.
Aurora Borealis and the Autumnal Equinox
The equinox is also a prime time to see the Northern Lights due to an alignment of the Earth's and Sun's magnetic fields, which allows solar wind to interact more easily with our atmosphere.
The equinox increases the chance of seeing the aurora borealis due to the Russell-McPherron effect, where the alignment of the Earth's magnetic field during these times makes it easier for charged solar wind particles to enter our atmosphere and cause spectacular auroral displays. This effect is separate from the solar cycle, although increased solar activity can further enhance aurora sightings, particularly during the spring and autumn equinoxes around March and September.
The Earth's axis is tilted neither towards nor away from the sun during an equinox, leading to roughly equal daylight and darkness across the globe. During an equinox, the Earth's magnetic field aligns in such a way that it creates holes in its protection from the solar wind. This weakened magnetic field allows more charged particles from the sun to penetrate Earth's upper atmosphere. The interaction of these energized particles with oxygen and nitrogen in the atmosphere creates the vibrant colors of the aurora borealis.
The increased geomagnetic activity during equinoxes leads to a greater chance of intense and colorful auroral displays. The spring equinox in March) and autumn equinox in September are considered the best times for aurora viewing. When combined with periods of higher solar activity (like the current solar maximum), the equinox effect can result in even more impressive and widespread auroras.
