Meteor Showers
July is a great month for meteor showers! The Southern Delta Aquariids peak around July 29-30, with some activity from the Alpha Capricornids also visible at that time. The best viewing will be in the late evening and predawn hours after the waxing crescent moon has set, especially in dark sky locations. The Southern Hemisphere and tropical latitudes in the Northern Hemisphere will have the best views. Expect to see faint meteors, potentially 15-20 per hour under optimal conditions. The meteors will appear to radiate from near the star Skat (Delta Aquarii) in the constellation Aquarius. The Southern Delta Aquariids are thought to originate from Comet 96P/Machholz.
The Perseids, a more prolific shower, begin in mid-July and peak in August. This shower is known for its brighter meteors. They peak on warm August nights in northern hemisphere. The Perseids are active from July 14 to September 1. They reach a strong maximum on August 12 or 13, depending on the year. Normal rates seen from rural locations range from 50-75 shower members per hour at maximum. The Perseids are particles released from comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle during its numerous returns to the inner solar system. They are called Perseids since the radiant is located near the constellation of Perseus. Unfortunately, this year, the waning gibbous moon will compromise this shower at the time of maximum activity and only the brighter meteors will be visible.
Find a dark sky location away from city lights for the best views. Allow your eyes to adjust. It takes about 20-30 minutes for your eyes to fully adjust to the darkness. Meteor showers can be unpredictable, so be patient and give your eyes time to scan the sky. Bring a blanket or lawn chair, get comfortable, and enjoy the show.
